MALKIN is a 2D, hand-drawn tactical RPG with an emphasis on storytelling. It is made with the IceBlink Engine, a versatile toolset for developing RPGs in the style of the Gold Box classics of the 80s and 90s.
Gameplay
Character Creation
Distribute stat points, pick your lore background, and choose your spells. All choices in character creation have consequences in exploration and combat.
Exploration
A quest to find the blood of a murderer leads the young witch and two strange companions into woods, field, and fen. Find the tools you need to survive the depredations of the Congress of Moths. Solve the mystery before time runs out.
Tactical Combat
Use spells, items, and tactical ingenuity to repel the forces hunting you. Exploit synergies between you and your companions. Combat poses balanced challenge for wildly different builds.
Storytelling
Writing
Novelistic dialogue and narration tell the story of the young witch’s unconventional quest. Plot, subplot, and side quests are thematically coherent. There is no worldbuilding for its own sake: the world emerges from the story, not vice versa.
Multiple Endings
Will you find the blood? Will you solve the real mystery? And if you do, what will you do with that knowledge? Several endings are possible. Replay the game to discover new endings and fresh revelations.
Atmosphere
Hand-drawn graphics and mellow-to-melancholy banjo, synth, and vocal tracks complement the storytelling. All writing, music, and art in the game are made by one person (me).
